Teen Jumps Into Action When Grandma Stops Breathing

When you think about “unexpected heroes,” you probably picture firefighters, paramedics, or people who instinctively run toward danger. But in upstate New York, that hero was a 14‑year‑old kid hanging out at home with his grandma.

Ryan Long noticed his grandmother, Michelle, wasn’t feeling right. Then things got scary fast. She stopped breathing. With no way to get her to the hospital, Ryan grabbed his phone and called his grandpa, who happened to already be at the local hospital.

That call changed everything.

A nurse overheard what was happening and jumped in to help. Through a video call, she coached Ryan step‑by‑step through CPR. Ten minutes of chest compressions. Ten minutes of a middle schooler trying to save someone he loves while two nurses kept him focused and confident.

By the time paramedics arrived, Ryan had kept his grandma alive long enough for them to take over. Doctors say his quick thinking and those compressions are the reason she survived.

Last week, Ryan got honored at school with something called the Eagle of Excellence Award, plus a “Healthcare Hero” title from the hospital. Even better, nurses visited his school to teach his classmates CPR so they would know what to do too.

Ryan’s advice for anyone who ever doubts themselves in a crisis:

“If you’re thinking of doing something that’s positive, then do it.”

Couldn’t have said it better.
