Are our kids burned out?

These days, a lot of adults are feeling burned out, but it seems it’s not just limited to grown-ups. According to a new survey of 2-thousand parents of school age kids, 70% of them believe their child is actually experiencing more burnout than they are.

The poll reveals:

  • About two-thirds of moms and dads say their child comes home after school with a “low mental battery.”
  • The top signs parents recognize as burnout include changes in sleep patterns (44%), changes in appetite (35%), less interest in activities they used to enjoy (34%) and avoiding social activities (33%).
  • Many parents are unsure how to get their child the tools they may need, with 70% admitting they wish there was a handbook on how to talk to their child about mental health.
  • More than three-quarters (81%) of parents wish schools offered more easily accessible mental health services.
  • But schools are also struggling with a lack of staff to support students’ mental health needs, as only 14% of schools meet the American School Counselor Association’s recommended ratio of one school counselor for every 250 students.
  • Parents report that nearly a third of kids talk to them about their feelings once a week or less, while some kids only do every two to three weeks.
