When friends and classmates of Annie Schlarmann, a junior at Monticello High School in Eastern Iowa, learned that she didn’t have a date for prom, they decided to make the night unforgettable for her. Annie’s friends organized an extra-special prom evening starting with a pre-prom dinner followed by activities like axe throwing and a trip to get ice cream.
Annie's mother, Sue Schlarmann, was deeply moved by the gesture. As a parent of a child with Down syndrome, she expressed gratitude for her daughter receiving the same opportunities as her peers. And Annie’s sister, Ellen Schlarmann, who’s a teacher, called it “a beautiful example of what kindness and empathy looks like.”
When recalling the special evening with her friends, Annie was overwhelmed with emotion, saying she had a fun time at prom because of their thoughtfulness. “I love them," she says, "They mean a lot to me."
