When you’re not using Wi-Fi, everything you do on your phone online eats up your data, but some apps gobble up many more megabytes than others. And thanks to new research from Holafly, we now know the worst offenders.

  • They used the My Data Manager app to test data usage of the most popular apps on both an iPhone 15 Pro Max and an Android Xiaomi Redmi 9.
  • They shut down all other apps and turned off Wi-Fi access, then they started a stopwatch when launching the app.
  • They used each app for five minutes and recorded the total data usage (MB) from My Data Manager reports.
  • So, what’s the worst offender? YouTube eats up more mobile data than any other popular apps tested, at 193 MB for five minutes of typical use.
  • That’s close to 29% more than the next one on the list, Disney+ with 150MB.
  • The social media app that uses the most data is Snapchat with 101 MB, while Safari is the mobile browser that uses the most, 56MB.
