If TikTok is banned, what will happen on your phone?

There are only a few days until TikTok could possibly get banned in the United States. And that has a lot of people wondering what will happen on their phones. Here are the two likeliest scenarios:

  • It will go dark. When you open the app, you’ll get no content. Instead, you’ll see a message along the lines of “This service is not available in your country.”
  •
  • It will degrade over time. The app will still work, but it won’t be updated with any new features or security patches. And as time goes by, it will become less and less functional.

If you haven’t downloaded the app by Sunday, and the ban goes into effect, you won’t be able to – it will no longer be available in app stores. But if you already have it, don’t worry – you’re not getting in trouble. The new law targets distributors like Apple and Google, not individuals.
