Valentine’s Day is next week and while having a lovely meal at a restaurant is the traditional option for lots of lovebirds, it’s not always the most romantic. The thing is, it can be almost impossible to score a reservation, the restaurant may be crowded and rush you through your dinner to turn the table over, and even worse? There could be inflated prices because of the holiday.

Want to try something different this year? You can treat yourself and/or your valentine to a special celebration with one of these Valentine’s Day date alternatives.

  • Cook an at-home meal kit together - Not only is it a fun project to do with the one you love, you get to eat it at the end. With a meal kit, every step is planned out, so even newbies in the kitchen can make a decent meal.
  • Dinner AT the movies - Why waste time going to dinner and then seeing a movie when you can do both at once. Some AMC, Regal and other theaters, like Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, serve food and cocktails for a dine-in movie experience.
  • Make a charcuterie board - Grazing is a valid meal choice and if you don’t feel like doing all the slicing, buy the pre-cut meats and cheeses and all you have to do is arrange and snack.
  • Hire a chef - Sure, it’s a little bougie, but it’s romantic, too, and believe it or not, it doesn’t have to break your budget. There’s a big range when it comes to the cost of bringing in a pro, so do your research, then enjoy more quality time with your valentine while the chef cooks for you.
  • Have a potluck with friends - You don’t have to be part of a couple to enjoy Valentine’s Day. Turn it into a group celebration and ask friends to bring a dish to share and you’re all set.
  • Sign up for a cooking class - If you’re looking for an experience, a one-time cooking class could be it. You’ll get to work as a team and enjoy the food at the end, and you can even sign up for an online cooking class just for Valentine’s Day.
  • Order delivery - There’s no need to overthink a date for the holiday. Sure, it’s obvious, but it’s also perfect since there’s no reservation required and you don’t have to make anything, go anywhere, or even wear pants. You could even order from that restaurant you couldn’t get a reservation for or use a service like Goldbelly to order your partner’s favorite food from a restaurant across the country.
