Do you wash new clothes before wearing them? You will now. According to experts, new clothes can be crawling with bacteria, fungi, parasites, and even chemicals from the manufacturing process. These can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions, and other unpleasant surprises.
A TikTok content creator knows this all too well. She claims she got ringworm, a highly contagious fungal infection, from contact with new clothing.
“When you buy new clothes, please wash them,” says May Ricketts in a viral clip. “I know [that when] you buy something new, you just want to wear it – but I got ringworm from working in the fitting room of a big clothes retailer.”
“All I did was handle the clothes – I didn’t even put them on,” she continues. “And I got ringworm from touching them.”
According to the CDC, “Ringworm can spread through clothing, towels, and bedding that [has] not been disinfected after use by someone with ringworm.”
