We jokingly call it "adulting," but everyone knows that's just a code word for "stress." Would you believe it if we said just two simple words can have a significant effect on your relationship with stress? Neuroscientist Anne-Laure Le Cunff suggests that the phrase "so what?" can be incredibly helpful. And it's not just a matter of surrendering and letting the chips fall where they may; she says it's a way of getting past the initial fear of the problem to the possible consequences, and figuring out how to deal with them. She says the great thing about "so what?" is it helps you to focus on what you can control, and to be solution-oriented. The phrase, she suggests, gets us over the anxiety of the looming initial problem, and lets us work on controlling the outcome. Simply put, she says, teach yourself to say "so what?" over and over, until you get to a point where you have a solution you can work towards, and establishes that it won’t really matter in the end.
