Is the secret to the Bermuda Triangle out?

Next someone’ll be claiming that Bigfoot isn’t real. Australian scientist Karl Kruszelnicki says there’s nothing supernatural about the Bermuda Triangle, and blames “rogue waves” for the various disappearances over the years. He explains that this busy stretch of ocean sees many ships and planes, so the number of disappearances is what you’d expect, and nothing really unusual.

His view is backed by NOAA and Lloyd’s of London, who say there’s no more danger here than in any other well-traveled ocean area. The real problems are rough weather, strong currents like the Gulf Stream, tricky navigation around many islands, and human errors. Kruszelnicki says the myth of the Bermuda Triangle survives because strange stories and spooky ideas are more exciting than the truth.
