If you’ve been enjoying the work‑from‑home life, here’s something to think about before heading back to the office. A new look at the numbers shows that returning to in‑person work can get expensive fast.

What Workers Spent in 2023

A 2023 report estimated that full‑time office workers spent around $12,240 a year just to show up. That includes everything from commuting and parking to childcare, clothing, and lunch. Basically, all the things you forget about until you’re doing them again.

A Deeper Look at State‑by‑State Costs

Payroll company SensaPay dug into the numbers and found that the cost of simply commuting and eating varies a lot depending on where you live. And keep in mind, this doesn’t even include childcare, clothing, dog walking, or housecleaning. These totals are only for getting to work and feeding yourself.

Here’s what they found:

  • Hawaii tops the list at $9,651 a year, with about $2,500 going to commuting and a whopping $7,100 spent on meals out.
  • Nevada follows at $9,398.
  • California workers spend around $8,844.
  • New York comes in at $8,639.
  • Wyoming rounds out the top five at $8,400.

Even the lower‑cost states still add up quickly once you factor in gas, parking, and the occasional “I forgot my lunch” moment.

Why It Matters

For many people, the return to office isn’t just about time. It’s about money. And with 2026 creeping closer, these numbers are a good reminder to plan ahead, especially if your workplace is shifting away from remote options.

The Bottom Line

Going back to the office can be great for socializing, structure, and getting out of the house. But it’s also a financial commitment that varies a lot depending on where you live. Knowing the numbers can help you prepare and maybe even negotiate a perk or two.
