Retro Romancing Is Back and It Is Sweeter Than Ever
If you have been craving a little more heart and a little less swiping, you are not alone. One of the biggest dating trends of 2026 is something called “retro romancing,” and it is exactly what it sounds like.
What Is Retro Romancing?
Retro romancing is all about bringing back the classic gestures that used to make dating feel special. Think holding doors, showing up with flowers, writing love notes by hand, choosing a phone call instead of a text and even cooking a meal for someone instead of ordering takeout.
It is simple, thoughtful and honestly kind of refreshing.
Where Did This Come From?
The term comes from the dating site Plenty of Fish. Their dating expert Michael Kaye says the trend is inspired by the way earlier generations dated before everything became digital and instant.
According to their research, a lot of singles are looking at their parents’ and grandparents’ love stories and thinking, “Wait… that actually sounds nice.”
Gen Z Is Leading the Charge
Here is the twist. The generation most into this softer, sentimental style of dating is Gen Z. More than a third say they prefer these old-school moves over the fast-paced, emoji-filled dating culture we are used to.
Maybe romance never really died. Maybe it just needed a little nudge.
Why People Love It
Retro romancing feels personal. It slows things down. It makes dating feel intentional instead of rushed. And in a world where everything is instant, a handwritten note or a thoughtful gesture stands out in the best way.
Want to Try It?
You do not need a grand gesture. Start small. Call instead of text. Leave a note. Bring someone their favorite snack. It is the little things that make someone feel seen.
