If you’ve stepped outside lately, you already know the cold is no joke. Arctic air is sweeping across the country, and the forecast says it’s only getting colder. So everyone is digging deep into their winter survival kit. Heated blankets. Double socks. Hot tea. But one trick is stealing the spotlight, and it’s surprisingly spicy.

The NFL Moment That Started It

During Sunday’s playoff game between the LA Rams and the Chicago Bears, temperatures were sitting in the teens. Sideline reporter Melissa Stark shared a fun little secret from the Rams bench. Several players sprinkled cayenne pepper into their socks to keep their feet warm.

Yes. Cayenne pepper. In their socks.

Does It Actually Work?

Turns out, it does. Scientists say cayenne pepper contains capsaicin, the compound that gives it that fiery kick. Capsaicin boosts circulation and widens blood vessels, which helps create a warming sensation on the skin. So your feet feel warmer even when the air around you is freezing.

Thinking About Trying It?

Herbalists say it can work for regular folks too, but there’s a right way to do it. Mix about half a teaspoon of cayenne with foot powder before sprinkling it in your socks. The powder helps keep things comfortable and prevents the spice from getting too intense.

Because if you overdo it, you’ll definitely feel the burn. And not in a fun, cozy way.
