If you’ve ever wondered what an Olympic medal is really worth, this year’s Winter Games in Italy just delivered a record-breaking answer. And yes, the numbers might surprise you.

Gold Is… Mostly Silver?

Thanks to rising metal prices since 2024, this year’s gold medals are valued at around $2,300. Sounds impressive, right? Here’s the twist: Olympic “gold” medals aren’t solid gold. They’re mostly silver with a thin layer of gold on top. Still gorgeous, still iconic, just not the treasure chest item you might imagine.

Silver Shines Bright Too

Silver medalists aren’t far behind. With silver prices climbing, these medals are worth nearly $1,400. Not bad for second place.

And Bronze? Well…

Bronze medals are mostly copper, which means they’re worth only a few dollars. Yep. A handful of change. But honestly, the emotional value is priceless, and that’s what athletes care about most.

Recycled and Ready for Glory

Italy’s state mint is producing more than 700 medals this year, and they’re using recycled metals to do it. It’s a cool sustainability move that gives old materials a new life on the world stage.
