If your phone lights up with random calls and sketchy texts all day, youâre in good company. A new U.S. News survey confirms what so many of us already feel. Scammers are everywhere, and theyâre getting bold.
Nearly half of adults say they get scam messages every single day. Every day. And more than 75 percent say it happens at least once a week.
These scams arenât just annoying. Theyâre expensive. Almost one in four Americans has lost money to a scam in the past three years. The typical hit was around $250, but the average was much higher at nearly $2,000. Only about a third of people ever got their money back.
Thatâs a lot of money disappearing into thin air.
All this scam activity has changed how we behave online. About 77 percent of Americans say theyâre more cautious now. That means ignoring messages from unknown numbers, refusing to share personal info over the phone, and thinking twice before clicking anything that looks even slightly suspicious.
