We all know sleep is important, but it turns out how you sleep—specifically, how you sleep next to your partner—might say more about your relationship than you think.
A new study from professor Richard Wiseman looked at 1,000 couples to learn about their favorite sleeping positions, their personalities, and how happy they felt in their relationships. The results are surprisingly relatable.
Here’s where things get interesting. When couples were asked how they prefer to sleep together, three positions stood out:
- Back-to-back: The most popular, with 42% choosing this. It’s sometimes called the “cliffhanger,” especially if there’s a little distance between you.
- Spooning: A cozy 31% prefer facing the same direction.
- Face-to-face: Only 4% sleep nose-to-nose. (Honestly… understandable.)
💬 What Your Sleep Distance Says
It’s not just the position—it’s the space between you.
- 12% of couples sleep less than an inch apart.
- Only 2% sleep more than 30 inches apart.
And that distance matters. Wiseman found that 94% of couples who sleep in close contact say they’re happy in their relationship. Compare that to 68% of couples who don’t touch at all.
The trend continues:
- 86% of couples sleeping less than an inch apart say they’re happy.
- Only 66% of those sleeping more than 30 inches apart say the same.
So yes, that tiny inch might be saying something.
🎨 Personality Clues in Your Sleep Style
The study also found some fun personality connections:
- Extroverts tend to sleep closer to their partners.
- Creative people are more likely to sleep on their left side.
