If mornings feel like a personal attack, you’re not alone. Most of us roll out of bed feeling like we need a loading bar over our heads. But a new Japanese study says there’s a surprisingly simple way to feel more awake, and it takes absolutely zero effort.
The secret is… light
Researchers found that getting about twenty minutes of natural light before you wake up can reduce that foggy, half‑asleep feeling. It’s basically giving your brain a gentle heads‑up that morning is coming.
Sounds great, right? But how do you get sunlight before you’re even awake?
Easy ways to try it
You don’t need to sleep outside or anything dramatic. Here are a few simple ideas:
- Open your blinds before you go to bed so the morning sun can do its thing.
- If you wake up during the night, crack the curtains a bit.
- Ask your partner to open the blinds when they get up.
- Try a sunrise alarm clock that slowly brightens your room before your alarm goes off.
None of these require you to actually do anything in the morning, which is the best part.
Why it works
Your body responds to light even when your eyes are closed. That early glow helps your internal clock shift into “wake up” mode so you don’t feel like you’re dragging yourself into the day.
