If you’ve been wondering what actually makes people happier, a Harvard happiness expert just shared the daily habits that really matter. And a few of them aren’t what you’d expect.

Here are the habits he says truly happy and healthy people practice every day.

🍎 They Eat Like They Care About Themselves

A balanced, nutritious diet isn’t just good for your body. It supports your mood and long-term mental health too. Happier people tend to treat food as fuel, not a reward or a punishment.

🏃 They Move Their Bodies, But Not Excessively

Exercise is important, but Brooks warns that going overboard can backfire. You don’t need to be a gym warrior. Just move often and in ways that feel good.

🍷 They Keep Drinking and Smoking in Check

Brooks says the happiest people are moderate with alcohol and tobacco. If they struggled with either, they quit. It’s less about perfection and more about protecting their well-being.

📚 They Never Stop Learning

This one might surprise you. Lifelong learners tend to be happier and healthier. Curiosity keeps your mind active and gives you a sense of purpose. Whether it’s a new hobby, a class, or even a podcast, learning keeps life interesting.

🧩 They Get Good at Solving Problems

Life throws curveballs. Happy people aren’t immune to stress, but they’ve learned how to handle it. Brooks says they use tools like therapy, meditation, prayer, or journaling to work through challenges instead of ignoring them.

💛 They Prioritize Love

This is the big one. Brooks says the happiest people have strong relationships, whether that’s a loving marriage or deep friendships. According to him, “Happiness is love. Full stop.” And honestly, that feels true.
