No Phones, No Yelling, No Shorts… Welcome to Augusta

The Masters - Round One

If The Masters is on your bucket list, you’re not alone. Golf fans wait years — sometimes decades — for a chance to walk the fairways at Augusta National. But once you’re in, you’re playing by their rules. Here’s what every fan should know before stepping onto that perfectly manicured grass.

⛳️ First: Getting In Is a Big Deal

The Masters has been held at Augusta National Golf Club since 1934, and the place only opens to the public once a year. Tickets are awarded through a lottery system, and about 40,000 fans — or “patrons,” as the club insists on calling them — attend each day.

If you’re one of the lucky ones, congratulations. Now let’s talk about what you can and can’t do.

👗 The Dress Code Is… Strict

Augusta National is all about tradition, and that includes how you look.

Here’s what’s not allowed:

  • Shorts
  • Denim
  • Untucked shirts
  • Five‑pocket pants
  • Backwards baseball caps
  • Metal‑spiked golf shoes
  • Pointed heels
  • Going barefoot (yes, someone tried)

🎒 Bags: Yes. Giant Bags: No.

Unlike most stadiums, clear bags aren’t required. You can bring a backpack or purse, but it can’t be bigger than 10 x 10 x 12 inches. Enough room for sunscreen and snacks… except…

🥪 No Outside Food or Drinks

You can’t bring your own, but honestly, you won’t want to. The Masters is famous for its cheap concessions. Their iconic pimento cheese sandwich is only $1.50, and buying one of everything on the menu would cost you just $77. In 2026, that’s basically free.

🚫 No Signs, No Flags, No Banners

Anything that blocks someone’s view is a no-go. Augusta National wants the focus on the golf, not your homemade “Go Tiger!” poster.

🤫 Quiet, Please

This is not the place to yell “Get in the hole!” or blast music from a speaker. Noise-making devices are banned, and shouting or profanity can get you removed from the grounds.

Yes, even if your favorite player misses a putt.

📵 The Big One: No Phones. At All.

This is the rule that shocks most first-timers.

You can’t bring:

  • Phones
  • Cameras
  • Smart watches
  • Fitness trackers that send messages
  • Anything that records or transmits data

🪑 Chairs Are Allowed… With Conditions

You can bring a chair or stool, but it must be collapsible and have no arms. You also can’t sit on the grass, so many fans buy the official Masters chair from the gift shop. It’s practically a badge of honor.

🏌️‍♂️ And Whatever You Do… Don’t Take Souvenirs

This is where things get wild.

Fans are not allowed to take:

  • Sand
  • Signs
  • Flags
  • Golf balls
  • Anything from the grounds

One guy tried to scoop sand into a cup back in 2012. He was arrested and ended up paying around $20,000. That’s one expensive handful of dirt.
