If you’ve scrolled through social media lately, you may have seen people raving about a new skin care trick that sounds a little… fishy. Literally. The internet is buzzing about sardines and their supposed skin benefits, and while it’s easy to roll your eyes, there’s actually some science behind the hype.
According to Dr. Shira Wieder, a dermatologist and assistant professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, sardines can act as a preventative tool for your skin. They won’t magically erase dark spots or turn back the clock, but they may help keep things from getting worse.
For example, when it comes to pigmentation, sardines won’t reverse what’s already there. They might, however, help prevent new pigmentation caused by UV exposure. Think of it as giving your skin a little extra support from the inside out.
Sardines are packed with omega‑3 fatty acids, which have natural anti-inflammatory properties. That’s why they may help calm certain skin concerns like acne or inflammatory skin conditions.
Dr. Wieder is clear, though. Sardines aren’t a replacement for medication. If you’re hoping for a dramatic transformation, this isn’t the magic bullet. But if you’re looking for a gentle, food-based boost, she says there could be real benefits.
If you already enjoy sardines, this trend is basically a win. If you’re not a fan, you don’t have to force yourself to love them. There are plenty of other ways to get omega‑3s, but sardines are one of the most affordable and nutrient-dense options.
