If you grew up hearing “don’t go to bed with wet hair,” you probably shrugged it off as one of those old sayings. But it turns out there’s real science behind it, and your hair might be paying the price.
When your hair is wet, each strand swells like a stretched rubber band. It’s softer, more fragile, and way more likely to snap. Now picture that fragile hair rubbing against a pillowcase for hours. That’s a recipe for breakage, frizz, and those mystery tangles you wake up with.
Here’s a term you may not have heard before: hygral fatigue. It happens when your hair stays wet for too long and absorbs too much moisture. The result is hair that feels gummy, stretchy, and prone to breaking. Basically, it’s moisture overload.
Dermatologist Joyce Park explains that a damp pillow creates a warm, humid environment. That’s great for yeast growth, not so great for your scalp. It can lead to dandruff, itching, and even scalp acne.
The Easy Fix
You don’t need a full blowout before bed. Just take a few minutes to dry your hair so it’s not soaking. Your strands and your scalp will thank you.
