An anonymous hacker has released five episodes of Orange Is the New Black’s Season 5 after Netflix reportedly failed to meet the criminal’s financial demands. (It is unclear what how much the hacker demanded).
The first 10 episodes of the season were shared shortly before 6 a.m. ET Saturday. Leaked in 10 different files, they totaled about 11.46 gigabytes.
- The hacker, who goes by the handle of “thedarkoverlord,” kicked off the leak by publishing the premiere episode for the forthcoming OITNB season Friday to the Pirate Bay.
- The streaming giant had set June 9th as the release for OITNB. No word on whether Netflix will move that date up. In a statement, Netflix said: “We are aware of the situation. A production vendor used by several major TV studios had its security compromised and the appropriate law enforcement authorities are involved.”
- The hacker isn’t stopping with the hit Netflix show. The cybercriminal claimed via Twitter to have unreleased shows from ABC, Fox, National Geographic and IFC.
- According to Variety, the shows were stolen in an attack on the post-production studio Larson Studios in 2016. The hacker does not allegedly have access to the final three episodes of OITNB’s season 5 because the episodes were unavailable at the time of the heist.
- In a message posted Saturday, thedarkoverlord wrote: “It didn’t have to be this way, Netflix. You’re going to lose a lot more money in all of this than what our modest offer was. We’re quite ashamed to breathe the same air as you. We figured a pragmatic business such as yourselves would see and understand the benefits of cooperating with a reasonable and merciful entity like ourselves.”
- Last year, Netflix renewed OITNB for season 5, 6 and 7.
