Schrock Innovations tips to Keep Computer Safe with the recent cyber attacks

Schrock Innovations tips to Keep Computer Safe

While you can never be 100% secure from viruses and malware, infections are attracted to the least protected devices.  Here is how to make sure your computer or laptop stays safer in the ever more dangerous online world:

1)                  Run a good Anti-Virus program.  Consumer Reports regularly ranks computer security programs - both free and paid versions.  They consistently find that Norton products are among the best and free options like AVG or Avast land somewhere in the middle of the overall pack in terms of effectiveness.  Schrock Innovations recommends Symantec Endpoint anti-virus software.  Also avoid the free or discounted software form your internet provider - its designed to protect their network more than it protects your computer.

2)                  Get your third-party software up to date.  We all have programs like Flash, Java, Adobe Reader, Dropbox, etc. on our computers.  There is an average of 12 patches a week for these applications to close vulnerabilities as they are discovered.  You can make time to stay on top of it or use a program like Secure Updater to silently and automatically do it for you.  Get a 14-day free trial at www.secureupdater.com and see how good of a job you have been doing!

3)                  Download your Windows Updates.  Your computer will do this for you automatically.  Patches are sent out by Microsoft the second Tuesday of each month.  However, they are not installed until you reboot your computer.  Take a moment to check for updates and reboot your PC today.  It could save you hundreds of dollars!

4)                  Be wary of emails.  Most ransomware like the WannaCry infection initially penetrates a computer through email.  For example, in an office of 25 people, one person who opens an email attachment with an "invoice attached" can bring down an entire company.  As a rule don't open attachments unless you are expecting them.

5)                  Heads up Mac users!  You can breathe easier that WannaCry doesn't impact Apple computers - yet.  Viruses and malware - including ransomware - do infect Macs.  Apple computers need antivirus just like PCs and can also run Symantec Endpoint.
